Tweedsmuir Lecture


 

The Tweedsmuir Lecture, named for John Buchan, Lord Tweedsmuir of Elsfield, Governor-General of Canada, 1935 - 1940, is the 'flagship' event of Ottawa Branch.

The 2010 Lecture, "Dr Samuel Johnson" will be delivered by John Young.

  Date and time:  Thursday, March 11th at 7 pm
  Venue:  Delta Hotel, Queen Street
  Cost:  $25 - refreshments will be served
  Closing date for reservations:  Monday, March 1st

Dr, Johnson (1709-1784), made lasting contributions to English literature as a poet, essayist, moralist, literary critic, biographer, editor and lexicographer. Johnson has been described as "arguably the most distinguished man of letters in English history" He is also the subject of "the most famous single work of biographical art in the whole of literature": James Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson.

John Young is an Ottawa lawyer with a strong interest in literary matters and an equally strong reputation as a raconteur. His Life of Samuel Johnson. may differ from Boswell's!

The Lecture is open to the Public and ESU Ottawa welcomes all guests, especially members of Ottawa Literary Societies.
